One Veteran’s Incredible Story of His Transition Back Into Everyday Life

Veteran Michael Breen tells the story of flying back to the United States the morning after a mission in Afghanistan. In just one day, Breen, who is now the Executive Director of the Truman National Security Project, went from a foxhole in Afghanistan to a mall in Washington D.C.

“It’s a very strange experience,” Breen said of transitioning back into everyday life at home. “You go from being a part of an intimately bonded collective organization with a mission, with people you know, with a common culture, to being very isolated in a society where the daily lived experience of the country and the daily lived experience of war are two incredibly different things.”

As a nation, we need to do a better job of supporting our veterans. Our roundtable discussed ways we can fulfill this obligation, from providing more comprehensive mental health resources to helping veterans find fulfilling jobs that utilize their training and skill sets.
