Uncharted: The Berkeley Festival of Ideas

How can we embrace the positive changes that accompany new technologies while mitigating negative ramifications?

Uncharted: The Berkeley Festival of Ideas 2015 brought together 40 writers, innovators and pioneers from across disciplines to discuss big ideas in new ways. The festival took place on October 16 and 17 and featured a series of one-on-one onstage conversations that pushed the boundaries of how we conceptualize the major challenges of our time. Over the course of the two-day festival, Reinvent Founder and CEO Peter Leyden interviewed four stellar innovators: Chris Anderson, the CEO of 3D Robotics; Tiffany Shlain, the founder of the Webby Awards; Robin Sloan, a technologist and best-selling author; and Brad DeLong, a professor of economics at UC Berkeley.

These four conversations all touched in some way on the ever greater intertwining of humans and technology. The interviews tackled important questions, including: What’s the right balance between caution and optimism when it comes to tech? How can we think critically about controlling and using technology wisely, rather than letting tech control us?
