Tanja Aitamurto is a Brown Fellow at the Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Stanford University, and is also the Deputy Director of the Brown Institute. The Brown Institute is a bi-coastal collaboration with the School of Engineering at Stanford and the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. Previously, she was a visiting researcher at the Program on Liberation Technology at Stanford. In her research projects, she examines the open paradigm in policy-making, journalism, and new product design (media innovations). She defines crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, and co-creation as methods for tapping into the collective intelligence of the crowd(s). Aitamurto is the author of Crowdsourcing for Democracy: New Era In Policy–Making (Committee for the Future, Parliament of Finland, 2012).
Aitamurto has previously studied at the Center for Design Research in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford and at the Innovation Journalism Program at Stanford University. She is a PhD Student at the Center for Journalism, Media, and Communication Research at Tampere University in Finland, and she holds a Master of Social Sciences Degree in Public Policy, and a Master of Arts in Humanities.
