    Chief Innovation Officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development

    Steven VanRoekel has served as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Chief Innovation Officer since the Fall of 2014, responsible for bringing technology and innovation to the global response to the Ebola crisis in Western Africa. Prior to USAID, VanRoekel was appointed by President Obama as the United States Chief Information Officer. As US CIO, VanRoekel focused on promoting innovation in people, cyber security, open data, mobile services, data centers, and cloud computing. Wired Magazine named VanRoekel one of the world’s top 10 cloud influencers and thought leaders. Prior to his position in the White House, VanRoekel served as the Managing Director of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and before joining the Administration, VanRoekel was at Microsoft, including three years as Speech and Strategy Assistant to Bill Gates, and culminating as Senior Director of the Windows Server division.
