Lawrence Chickering has founded or co-founded several public policy institutes. The first was on U.S. policy issues. A second was on international economic policy issues, and he is currently funding an institute that works with governments, promoting girls’ education and general education reform in traditional and tribal regions of developing countries. Chickering has a long-standing interest in conflict resolution and in reducing conflict in the American political system. Besides his work in girls’ education, which has strong transpartisan support, he is also coauthoring with a celebrated American educator a book on reform of government schools in the U.S. and India. Chickering has relied on his work in India for other writings on the challenge of promoting change in tribal societies.
