Heather has built her career at the intersection of American foreign policy and politics, working to close the gap between public debate and the best policy choices. She currently run the New Models of Policy Change project at New America, working with advocates and funders to identify and train the best innovative transpartisan partnerships that are overcoming political polarization.
Previously, she ran the National Security Network, a premier source for progressive security policy and messaging. She served in the Clinton Administration as Special Assistant and Speechwriter to President Clinton, as speechwriter to two Secretaries of State, and member of the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff. She began her career on Capitol Hill, served on the US Delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and has held management positions at the International Crisis Group, Human Rights First, Carnegie Endowment, and DATA/ONE Campaign. She co-hosts the #Drezburt podcast with Fletcher School profession Dan Drezner and serves on the Design Team of the Progressive Global Strategy Project and the board of the Scoville Fellowships.
