• Andrew Hessel

Distinguished Research Scientist, Autodesk Life Sciences

Andrew Hessel is a futurist, connector, and catalyst in biological technologies, helping industry, academics, and authorities better understand the rapid changes happening in life science. He works with a diverse team at Autodesk creating software tools for designing living and molecular systems. To demonstrate the capabilities of these tools, he is the founder and CEO of Humane Genomics, which is applying the latest advances in synthetic biology, robotics, and virology to make individualized (n-of-1) open source therapeutics for cancer, starting with canine patients.

Trained in microbiology and genetics, Andrew has always explored the forefront of genomics, first with Amgen, a global biopharmaceutical company, and then with the nascent synthetic biology and DIY-biology community. He is a co-leader of GP-Write, the international scientific effort organizing to extend the human genome project to the writing of large genomes, including the human genome. He speaks widely on topics that include cells as living computers, life science as the next IT industry, and biological safety and security.
