Reinvent Government Bureaucracy

Series: Reinvent America: Inaugural Series

How can we leverage common tech practices to make government bureaucracies work better?
Government is responsible for essential functions of society like ensuring running water, working sewage, and roads—yet bureaucracy often gets a bad rap. Jen Pahlka, founder and executive director of Code for America, led our roundtable participants in a discussion about how common tech practices can improve government bureaucracies. Shortly after hosting this conversation, Pahlka was named Deputy CTO of the United States. In this conversation, Pahlka made the case that several key developments – new technologies, a more civic-minded younger generation, and government budget cuts – are forcing innovation like never before. These experiments are reaching a critical mass and have the potential to achieve much more widespread adoption.
