Reinvent Net Neutrality
Should the Internet be treated as a public utility like telephones, and be regulated to ensure equal access for all?
In February 2015, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved net neutrality. Months earlier, our roundtable participants discussed the ways net neutrality is inextricably tied to our democracy.
“If you ever cared about network neutrality, now is the time to act,” declared Clay Shirky towards the close of this extraordinary roundtable. Participants discussed the need for Internet and tech communities to mobilize and push for the Internet to be treated like a public utility. Our roundtable also explored the possibility that telecom companies delivering the Internet could be classified as common carriers, like telephone companies, and thus covered under Title II of the Communications Act.
