Michael Pollan Calls for a National Food Policy

The author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma believes the United States needs a standardized policy regulating food production.

“We are, in effect, subsidizing both sides in the war on Type 2 Diabetes—we’re paying farmers to grow high-fructose corn syrup and we’re paying the costs of insulin pumps at the same time,” Pollan said in the Reinvent the Food Movement roundtable. Rather than allow agricultural interest groups to dictate what we eat, Pollan argues, President Obama needs to take action to ensure that all Americans have access to healthy food.

Two weeks after the Reinvent the Food Movement roundtable, Pollan and several coauthors (including fellow roundtable participant Ricardo Salvador) published a Washington Post opinion piece making a similar case for a national food policy.
